We discovered this little gem in Granada based on a recommendation from some mutual friends and we were not disappointed. Casa Lucia is a boutique hotel and yoga wellness retreat. A 2015 & 2016 Traveler’s Choice Award Winner for the Best in Service and Romance (2016) makes this the ideal oasis. With all the details of a boutique hotel from homemade bread, to organic soap and shampoo, they offer the benefits of boutique hotel accommodation with the services of a yoga wellness retreat. So if you prefer something in a quieter location but still only a 5 minute walk to the central square, then this is the place to go. The fresh bread is amazing and you can slide in a yoga class before breakfast, all included in your room price. The rooms are large and there is lots of natural light. After your breakfast you can relax in the pool or go for a walk to the main square, check out the local market, or take a tour of Las Isletas.
Casa del Agua has been recommended by many of our guests. The B&B is perfectly situated on Avenue Guzman, one half block south from the Cathedral & Central Park in Granada, Nicaragua. Being less than 50 meters from the cathedral in Granada’s main square, makes exploring Granada’s colonial beauty safe and easy. Gerry provides a personal touch and caters to all his guests. The B&B is a typical Spanish design with 3 individual rooms and a full house suite situated around an inner courtyard with a pool for those hot afternoons.
San Juan de la Isla was and still is a plantain farm that has added the hotel in recent years. The original buildings have been converted to rooms and a large main lodge where you can sit on the deck and enjoy the evening breezes during dinner.
The hotel has 4 rooms that contain 2 beds plus 2 bunk beds for small groups or families and then there are several beautiful cabins built right on the lake front and others spread around the main club house.
Charco Verde is another great place to stay on the island. It has its own ecologic reserve and Butterfly tent where you can spend a couple hours enjoying the many beautiful butterflies and a walk around the lagoon. The hotel is situated on the west shores of the island facing back to Rivas and San Jorge.
Several of our guests have stayed in this great hotel with an authentic island feel to it. Villa Paraíso Hotel is located right on the beautiful Santo Domingo beach on the east side of the isthmus between the 2 volcanos. The hotel has private cabins distributed among natural vegetation and overlooking the beach or close to it.
Mango Rosa is located north of San Juan del Sur just minutes away from some of the area’s best beaches—Maderas, Marsella and Majagual of world class surfing fame. You can fish and cruise aboard the La Panga Rosa (Mango Rosa’s 30′ custom panga fishing boat), partake in countless other adventurous excursions, or simply enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.
La Estacion is just around the corner from the main front street in San Juan del Sur which is great because it shields you from the noise of the bars and restaurants on the main strip at night so you can get a great sleep. They have good clean rooms and reasonable prices. Staying here you can still enjoy the vibe of San Juan del Sur but not have to be in the middle of it. A great location to spend a couple days exploring SJDS and surrounding areas.
Casa Canada is a 4 star 20-room cabana-style resort that was built and developed by our fellow Canadians that caters to all international travelers. Your stay at this ocean side resort will allow you to take in all the beauty of the Caribbean Sea off the east coast of Nicaragua. Relax in the islands only infinity pool, or enjoy food and drinks at our restaurant and bar, with seating right over the ocean, or explore all the amazing sites this island has to offer.
Staying in busy Granada not your thing? Casa Vista Lago is a short 15 minute drive from Granada. It is secluded and geared more to people that want to get away from the crowds and noise of Granada to relax down at the lake or sit by the pool for great R&R and some of the best views! We met Brian and Mary after they visited our beach house for a day and we were lucky enough to be the recipients of their wonderful hospitality. If the stunning view sitting on the edge of Laguno de Apoyo is not enough then the great food and company will definitely help you take the edge off for a couple of days.
We used to own a house on this stretch of beach and it is our favourite beach in Nicaragua. If you are looking to spend a few days at the beach and don’t want to rent a whole house or stay at a large hotel, then Casa Pochomil is the place for you. Situated on the beach just a short distance south of the fishing village of Pochomil, Diana will take excellent care of you. She is from Quebec, Canada and moved to Nicaragua full time in 2015 to run her hotel. Her restaurant is open all day so you don’t even have to walk anywhere to eat.

The hotel was originally a private residence that we have turned into a Boutique B&B Hotel. Our guests love it here because it feels like home. You get a key to come and go as you please even after we lock up for the night (please tip-toe after 10pm as some of our guests will be sleeping ?).
Wake up in the morning and have your breakfast made to order when you want. Breakfast is typically 7-10 but we are happy to accommodate what works for you. Have an early business meeting? No problem. Let us know the night before and your breakfast will be waiting on the table at the time you want it.
We cook all our food with fresh ingredients and from scratch…only cans if we have to. We make our bread, tortillas, peanut and almond butters, granola and pancake mixes, salad dressings and sauces from scratch as well as our cakes and cookies for dessert.
Don’t feel like going out for dinner? No problem. We have a menu for lunch and dinner that will satisfy most tastes.
Maybe you prefer a place to curl up and relax at the end of a busy, fun day of touring and sightseeing, or a long day in the office. Enjoy the patios, have a swim in our new pool, watch Netflix in our guest living room or cocoon in your spacious private room with a movie on satellite TV and we will bring your dinner to you. We will get you a drink, and perhaps find you a bit of homemade snacks or dessert before you nod off for the night. It’s what we do every night. We would love it if you joined us

On Good Friday 2017 we had the pleasure of doing a day trip to Leon with some friends to take in the creation of the Sawdust carpets that cover one of the main streets in Sutiaba on the west side of Leon. Resident artists spend all afternoon in the 36 degree Leon heat to create the sawdust carpets in preparation for the evening procession that marks the final carrying of the crosses during the Catholic Holy Week.
Creating these sawdust carpets is a common tradition around the world on Good Friday, The custom originated in Germany and was later adopted by Catholics in Central America. The procession actually walks over the carpets and then later they are all swept up and disposed of.
The carpets are made mostly of wet, colored sawdust and a few other materials that are used to decorate the creations (e.g. glitter). They artists sketch out their creation on a mat of uncolored wet sawdust, usually with a small stick, and then proceed to layer additional colors on top to build their carpet.
This video is a much compressed version of about 90 minutes of total video we took over the 2 hours it took us to walk the 5 or 6 blocks that are used to create the mats. Unfortunately we were not able to stay for the evening procession.
